Pop Songs and Poetry
I took Pop Songs and Poetry as part of my study abroad experience in the Netherlands. This class investigated the intersections of poetry, popular songs, and performance, and asked us to create our own poems and analyses of various poems/songs throughout. We discovered how considerations to rhythm, sound, and a number of other devices might unearth new meanings in both poetry and pop music. This class was one of the first I took while studying abroad and it taught me a lot about class dynamics in a different country: the class was collaborative and student-run for the most part, which challenged what I had previously known about class systems from the United States. It also required learning a new formatting style which is visible in my displayed piece.

Supernatural Narratives
Supernatural Narratives was an English course investigating the use of supernatural to understand lived experiences. We examined a variety of old and new texts which dealt with this topic (such as “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley and “Beloved” by Toni Morrison) and discussed how the supernatural was being used to deal with fundamental human issues such as love and loneliness. I took this class in the spring of 2022, after I had been dealing with a creative writing block. This class helped get me out of that block and subsequently taught me that my best creative work comes out when I am on a deadline, because it allows me to focus in and pay attention to the minute details in my writing.
Winter 2021
Writing 1133
WRIT 1133 was part of the common curriculum which I took in the winter quarter of my freshman year (2021). This was a research-intensive class with a focus on DU’s campus life and history. As students we had the opportunity to search through DU’s digital archives and create a final project centered around a certain historical event which happened on the DU campus. We also developed our observational skills and put together a portfolio of current campus life dynamics. The writing done in this class helped me develop my skills in research, organization, and making observations without judgement.
